How Does Parent Taught Drivers Ed Work?
After you register for the course, student and parent will be provided the necessary information to fulfill the parent-taught requirement and begin the online program material. Every student and parent is required to complete a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation PTDE packet along with the online drivers ed course. To get started:
Parents register your teen online
Fill out the PTDE packet from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and send it in
Finish unit 1 and we will send you a free certificate you can use to apply for your permit! (That's right! Teens 15+ can apply for a TX permit after the first unit with proper DL forms)
Complete the remaining course units online
Fulfill your 44 hours of Parent-Taught driver training
Getting a Texas Drivers Permit
Teens between the ages of 15-17 can apply for a Texas drivers permit after taking the first unit as long as they submit the proper DL forms (driver license forms).
The student and parent (or legal guardian) must bring forms DL-90A, DL-91A and DL-91B to their local TX DPS office. These forms will be included in the packet you get from the TDLR.

TX Parent-Taught Drivers Ed Course & DPS Permit Exam Online
Get our quality Online Parent Taught Drivers Education course with the TX DPS Online Permit Exam included! With this package your teen (after completing the 1st unit and who is at least 15 years of age) will be able to take the DPS knowledge test online at home!
How the Parent Taught Drivers Ed Works with the Online Permit Exam included:
Parents sign up your teen ages 14 to 17 for our Parent Taught Drivers Ed (PTDE) course online with DPS Online Permit Exam included.
Request your PTDE packet from Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
Once you receive your PTDE packet your teen can begin the online course.
Finish the first unit (six hours) of the online course and once your teen is at least 15 years old, they will be able to take the Texas DPS Online Highway Sign and Traffic Law (Permit) Exam.
When your teen passes the Permit Exam, they will receive an emailed Certificate of Completion with a notation showing the permit exam has already been passed.
You and your teen will take this certificate, along with all other required DL Forms included in your PTDE packet, to your local DPS office to receive a Learner's Permit. You can now start the Behind-the-Wheel training!
Finish the course, pass an online final exam to receive a Course Completion Certificate and complete the 44 hours of in-car training to be eligible for your first Texas Drivers License.
