Cell Phone Violation

Effective July 1st, 2021, a new law went into effect in California that states if a driver is issued a cell phone violation AND that driver had a previous cellphone violation within the past 3 years, then 1 point will now be added to their driving record. Previously, points were not given for cell phone violations, regardless of how many were received, so drivers did not take traffic school.

So, if someone were to receive a cellphone ticket on or after July 1st, 2021 and they had no other cellphone tickets within 3 years, then no point would go on their record, and they would not need to take traffic school. A point would only be added if someone received TWO cell phone tickets, with one being on or after July 1st and those tickets were within 36 months of each other, citation date to citation date.
