Help to Pass the DMV Permit Test

Free Practice Tests

- question from 1/3/2024 by Benny, filed under Free Practice Tests and DMV Test

My son can't pass the permit test using the handbook book, what else can he do to study?

Hello! My son is preparing for his second attempt at his permit test and is really nervous about not passing again. He's read the DMV Handbook twice now, but he's more of a visual learner and doesn't do well with retaining info from reading.

Do you have any suggestions or do you provide any help with passing the permit test? We live in California and his next test is in 2 weeks. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Best Regards, Benny

Hello Benny,

Thanks for sharing your story and please rest assured, your son is not alone! Many (many many) students do not pass their permit test on the first try. We checked with our partner Drivers Ed Direct Driving School and this is what they had to say...

Hi Benny, it's Chris here from Drivers Ed Direct! To answer your question:

First of all, don't be discouraged. It is actually common for students to take more than one attempt to pass the permit exam. I'm glad to hear that your son read the DMV Handbook, that is very important. However, as you mentioned, dry reading material is often hard to retain and not helpful for all learning styles.

In addition to reading the DMV Handbook, I would highly recommend taking as many practice tests as you can, and also watching videos that pair visual aids with the test questions.

We offer unlimited DMV practice tests modeled after REAL DMV test questions. This is a great tool for not only practice, but for also getting more familiar with the computerized multiple choice test taking like he'll see at the DMV. You can find this very low-priced practice test package here: Unlimited DMV Practice Tests

If you are looking for some free study aids, my team has worked hard to put together many free videos for new drivers. Here are some great permit prep videos to help your son study for his DMV test:

Finally, there's some great info in this video series with test taking tips and good things to know for students headed to the DMV on test day: How to Get a DMV Permit

We hope that helps and wish your son all the best! He can and will pass eventually, so practice, practice, practice and keep your head up!

Warm Regards,
Chris Kramer- Cofounder of Drivers Ed Direct
