Austin Driving Safety Course Requirements
If you were issued a ticket for a moving violation in Austin, you may be eligible to take a Driving Safety Course (DSC). You may not take more than one Driving Safety Course per 12 month period anywhere in Travis County to have a traffic ticket dismissed. However please note: if one of your cited violations is for not having your child properly in the seat or not having your child safety seat, you might still be able to take a Child Seat Belt Safety Course (in addition to a DSC).
You will NOT be eligible to take a Defensive Driving Safety Course for a violation cited for the following:
- Speeding 25 mph or more in excess of the posted speed limit
- You were driving without insurance or failed to maintain proof of financial responsibility
- You fled or left the scene of a traffic collision
- You passed a school bus illegally
- You were ticketed while driving in a Work Zone or Construction Zone while workers were present
Please Note: Commercial Drivers (those holding a CDL) are not eligible to take a Driving Safety Program in Austin, even if they were driving a non-commercial vehicle when ticketed.
Important: You MUST REQUEST PERMISSION to take a defensive driving course for the purpose of ticket dismissal BEFORE the appearance date written on your traffic ticket. Additionally, your TX driving record must not show that you've already completed a Defensive DSC OR Motorcycle Operator's Training Course (MOTC) within the last 12 months.
If you are eligible to attend an online Defensive Driving Safety Course, you will have NINTEY (90) days from your request date to successfully complete the Driver Safety Course. Note: It can take up to 14 business days to receive your certificate from any defensive driving school. In addition, you will need to get a certified, version 3A OR non-certified, version 3 copy of your Texas Driving Record from the Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS). Either version is acceptable. We can help you obtain the proper certificate.
To request defensive driving school, simply go to a Austin Municipal Court location within 10 days of your traffic citation and request permission in person. You can also request your DSC by mail if you choose. Either way, please follow the instructions on the sheet the peace officer gave you when your ticket was issued. Keep in mind, only the person/driver who was issued the traffic ticket may request permission to complete a Driving Safety class.
For a complete and up-to-date list of what you must submit to the court ON OR BEFORE the appearance date on your ticket, please visit the Official City of Austin County Municipal Court Website.
